Fly half Madoc Evans steered the ship as Carmarthen Quins took on Newport at Carmarthen Park on Friday, November 30.
Nothing unusual about that, you may add, marshalling his men. This fly half however is only 17 years old.
Evans, a Tenby United RFC graduate, is showing ability beyond his years within a youthful and exciting Quins backline.
Despite the defeat to Newport, who shot back to the top of the Super Rygbi Cymru league table after their Friday night victory, Evans is excited at the prospect that there is plenty more to come this season.
Speaking to S4C’s Gruff McKee after the game, Evans said:
“It’s alway going to be a tough game against Newport. They’re a good team and a strong team.
“We came away from last weekend’s game with high hopes. We were nearly there but just couldn’t get over the line with the last pass not getting to hand. They came out on the right side of the result.
“The boys played really well, to be honest the forwards put the ball on a plate for us, as they have all season. We can be better and we’ll have a few players back from injuries after the break.”
Evans is also a member of Scarlets Academy and is currently balancing his time between rugby training with Quins and Scarlets, and attending college.
When asked how he’ll spend the next few weeks with a break in the rugby calendar he said:
“I’ll just be looking to keep on top of things. Balancing school with the Scarlets, and here coming back better with a win hopefully.”
