The Super Rygbi Cymru season got off to a disappointing start for Carmarthen Quins going down to a defeat to Cardiff at Carmarthen Park.
Despite a strong start to the game, with Quins running in two tries to nil in the opening thirty minutes, it was Cardiff who finished the game strongly.
The visitors were down to thirteen men during the second half but Quins didn’t manage to take control during the two-man advantage.
Reacting to the result, Quins Director of Rugby Steff Thomas said: “Discipline in the second half cost us. We got caught up in the emotion of the game a little bit, and perhaps didn’t have the experience that Cardiff had out there.
“On the scoreboard, we lost the game in the last ten minutes of the first half. We should definitely have gone in 14-0 up at half time and maybe a little bit more.
“We didn’t finish the half chances out there. You’ve got to take your chances in this league, it’s very ruthless and there’s some learning in it for the boys.
“I don’t offer this as an excuse, it’s the reality, we had eight boys making their debuts today. That’s eight people who have 80-odd minutes or so of SRC rugby under their belt now moving forward, and they’ll be better for that.”
Cardiff’s four tries, and ten point lead, saw Carmarthen Quins start the season without picking up a single point and are in eighth place in the SRC table.
Thomas went on to say: “To come away from the game with nothing is gutting but again, performance wise for the youngsters, it’s an opportunity, which is what it’s about ultimately. They’ll take a lot from that.
“We’ll go away, have a look at it, and go up to RGC with our tails up and give a good account of ourselves.”
