In the sporting section of the Journal for the 19th January 1962, Cardinal reports on the progress the Quins have made in the West Wales Rugby Union Cup.
Superb performance
“Carmarthen R.F.C. are through to the semi-finals of the West Wales Rugby Union Cup. This is the first time since the season 1955-56, when Carmarthen won the cup that they have reached the semi-finals.
In a fortnight’s time when the draw will be made we shall know whether Carmarthen face Seven Sisters, Felinfoel, or the winners of the third round game between Gorseinon and Brynamman which has yet to be decided. Carmarthen’s combination of youth and experience has paid dividends and if Carmarthen reproduce last Saturday’s form in defeating Amman United they will not have to worry whichever of the four teams oppose them in the semi-finals.
Windsor Marks has scored 102 points this season equalling the record of Neville Jones who scored the same number of points in the 1951 season. The season is just over the half-way stage and Windsor is almost certain to break the individual club record. A well marshalled pack and Windsor Marks will be Carmarthen’s key to further success in the cup competition and the league championship.
On Saturday 27th January Carmarthen play cup holders Pontyberem in a league match which could well be the deciding factor of Carmarthen’s future in the championship. Carmarthen have taken two points from Pontyberem earlier in the season and are capable in their present form of doing so again.
