QUINS WIN BUT NOT HAVING A REGULAR
GOAL KICKER COULD PROVE COSTLY
By Paul Jones
Despite the fact that Carmarthen won this game by a convincing margin, they are going to find it difficult to keep up their league and cup challenge without a regular goal kicker. The services of Andy Barnett – selected for the Quins – were required by the college. Four tries were scored and not one conversion from favourable positions was put over.
It was rather disappointing when the referee did not turn up – or was it! If it had been a league game, then it might not have been such a “free of tension” affair as both sides badly needed the points to keep in the title hunt. It was rather amusing when supporters on the stand side of the field, realising that it was a friendly match, kept quiet with disappointment, while on the other side of the field some supporters, not aware of what had happened, were urging the Quins on to what they thought was a good league victory. Llandybie have been badly hit this season with injuries. At one time they had almost 12 players on the injured list. But despite this set-back, they have managed to field a young side which has far from discredited the name of the club. They have only lost two league games this season.
FIRST RUN
Two Llandybie players were having a run out for the first time on Saturday since being injured, full back Fowler and centre Dudley. They must have been glad of this friendly try-out. Llandybie, however, were a shadow of the side that met Carmarthen in the semi-final of the shield at Stradey last season, especially from the forwards point of view. Carmarthen stamped on their seal of command after Llandybie had shown a most imperious self-assurance, scoring a good try through winger McAvoy.
BY THE SCRUFF
But from then on the Quins took the game by the scruff of the neck and found some vulnerable positions in the Llandybie defence. Brian Davies, playing his first game with the first team hooked well and did some good work in the loose. Winger Dewi George, although he should have been tackled, made a good run down the field to score Carmarthen’s equaliser. On the other flank, Tudor Lewis with a raking run, neatly swerved inside two pairs of grappling hands to score another try.
