Carmarthen Quins travelled to Whitland for a much anticipated battling derby match and returned with a 15 – 14 win. The Quins had to dig deep but showed courage, determination and a commitment to the jersey in order to beat a very good Whitland team.
The game could have gone either way but it was the Quins who took their chances, held firm in defence and took the spoils. Whitland threw everything at them in the end and the crowd were thoroughly entertained as every player put their body on the line.
For the Carmarthen side Ricky Davies led his side to victory scoring two tries. He was well backed up by Aled Davies and Liam Fitzpatrick who were both brilliant in defence. The introduction of Jason Styles and Dai Halpin at half time proved decisive as they helped to take the game to the home side.
Behind the scrum Ollie Thomas had a sound defensive game and was well backed by Dion Howells and Sam Evans. Dan Bartley also kicked an important conversion and penalty when under immense pressure.
This win keeps the Quins’ unbeaten record intact, but in fairness to Whitland they will not lose many home matches, and they really tested the metal of their opponents. On the other hand Carmarthen did not take a backward step and fought for everything.
