Carmarthen Quins made their debut in the Carmarthenshire Tyres League after a break of nine years against an established Dunvant side away from home and completely destroyed them 67 – 0. The Quins were fitter, stronger and simply had too much footballing ability for their Swansea opponents.
Up front captain and prop, Rickie Davies, was immense with great support from Dennis Halpin and young Daf Evans playing his first game of senior rugby. Dane Bush was everywhere around the park closely followed by Gordon Lewis, Darren Gosling, Liam Fitzpatrick and evergreen, Mathew Mogs.
Scrum half, young Olly Thomas, was simply a class apart from anyone on the pitch. His vision, pace and reading of the game was outstanding. Simon Rogers stepped in at fly half at the last minute and used his experience and brilliant tactical awareness to put his side in the right areas from which to launch attacks.
Centres Rhodri Clark and Dion Howells caused Dunvant no end of problems and the back three of George Gleeson, John Gosling and Martain Penrawlick looked to run at every opportunity.
The team will take a lot of confidence from this first victory but will not get carried away as much tougher tests lie ahead of them. However, there is a much stronger squad to choose from this year with a fine blend of youth and experience and therefore they should be able to look forward to a successful season.
