Last Saturday the Quins hosted Llangennech in a top of the table clash at Abergwili. Both sides produced a high standard of rugby before the home side were able to claim a fine 15 – 13 victory.
Carmarthen started strongly and scored two tries through impressive young flanker, Aled Evans, and wing, Martain Penrawlick. Dan Bartley had his best game of the season with “top drawer” tactical play, using his long kicks to great effect and putting the Quins forwards on the front foot. Sam Davies also impressed, Mathew Morgan and Aled Evans were the pick of the pack and Carmarthen went into the interval leading 15 – 5, Bartley having added 5 points with the boot to the two tries scored.
After the break it was all Llangennech. They threw everything at their opponents and brought the score back to a nerve jangling 15 – 13. The telling factor was the home side’s desire to keep them out with a determined defensive display. The Quins were guilty of giving away too many penalties and making some wrong decisions at crucial times. Lady luck was with them on the day, however, as the visitors missed their final kick at goal to take the spoils and claim victory.
The Quins camp was thrilled with this hard fought win. All roads next week lead to Carmarthen Athletic Ground for the much anticipated local derby clash. A large crowd is expected in Johnstown with so much in local bragging rights at stake.
