Quins Still Top Despite Local Derby Defeat

By Keith Bond | 28/11/2011

On Saturday the Quins 2nd.XV travelled to Johnstown to play local rivals, Athletic Druids, in a Carmarthenshire Tyres League match. The much anticipated local derby was played in front of a large crowd. Both sides, as expected gave everything to the cause, but it was the home side which triumphed by 15 points to 9. All the scores came as a result of penalties with David Evans doing the kicking for the Athletic and Dan Bartley for the Quins.

Both sides attempted to play rugby in the terrible conditions but the home pack was stronger on the day and Lee and John Bassett were particularly impressive for the Athletic. For the Quins Mathew Morgan, Aled Evans and Ricky Davies played well but no tries were forthcoming on the heavy pitch despite the commitment and passion displayed by both sides.

The Athletic deserved their victory but the Quins did gain a losing bonus point which will keep them top of the League going into the Christmas period and New Year. This means that the Quins are very much still in the mix for the title.

The crowd seemed to enjoy the match and it was a good advert for 2nd. team rugby with both sides playing the game hard but fairly.
